Ball Positioning and Control Space

Effective dribbling requires control not only of when the player interacts with the ball and how the body moves, but also where the ball is positioned relative to the body.

The position of the ball changes continuously according to the purpose of the dribble. A player maintaining possession in place may organize the ball relatively close to the body, while a player accelerating, retreating, protecting the ball, or changing direction may require a different ball position.

Research supports the importance of spatial control in skilled dribbling. Skilled players demonstrate greater consistency in ball placement during stationary dribbling,¹˒² while research on straight speed dribbling identifies below-waist control and a forward-lateral ball position as characteristics of proficient performance within that specific task.³ Research on motor variability and coordination further suggests that skilled performers stabilize important task outcomes while allowing other movement components to adapt according to the demands of the task.⁴˒⁵˒⁶

For coaching purposes, two related concepts can be distinguished:

  • Control Position refers to the functional position of the ball relative to the player during the Control Phase.
  • Control Space refers to the broader three-dimensional area relative to the body within which the player can position, organize, redirect, and recover the ball while remaining prepared for the next basketball action.

Note: These are coaching concepts rather than established biomechanical classifications. Neither should be interpreted as one fixed position that the ball must occupy during every dribble.

4.1 Control Position

The Control Position represents a functional relationship between the ball and body from which the player can organize the next action.

During foundational stationary dribbling, this commonly occurs around the hip and waist on the ball side. This provides developing players with a simple initial reference:

However, the Control Position should not be interpreted as a precise anatomical point. Depending on the situation, the ball may be positioned:

  • Higher or lower
  • Closer to or farther from the body
  • More forward or backward
  • More lateral or medial

The Control Position required to maintain a stationary dribble may differ from the position used to accelerate, retreat from pressure, protect the ball, or prepare a change of direction.

The purpose of the Control Position is not to return the ball to exactly the same location on every dribble. Instead, it is to place the ball in a position from which the player can maintain control and efficiently transition into the next action.

This distinction is consistent with research showing that skilled movement does not require every joint or movement component to reproduce an identical trajectory. Instead, skilled coordination can combine stability in task-relevant outcomes with functional variability in the movements used to achieve them.⁴˒⁵˒⁶

4.2 Control Space

The Control Space represents the functional three-dimensional area relative to the player within which the ball can be effectively managed.

Rather than imagining one ideal position beside the hip, the player should gradually learn to control the ball across a range of positions while remaining capable of organizing the next action.

Control Space can be considered through three spatial dimensions:

  • Height: How high or low the ball is positioned.
  • Width: How far the ball is positioned laterally relative to the body.
  • Depth: How far the ball is positioned in front of or behind the body.

These dimensions interact continuously and should not be treated as independent rules. For example, the ball may be positioned:

  • Lower and Closer: When additional protection is required.
  • Forward and Lateral: During straight speed dribbling.
  • Wider from the Body: When creating separation or preparing a directional transfer.
  • Across the Body: When moving toward a new Control Position.

The appropriate Control Space changes according to the basketball problem. A useful coaching question is not simply: “Is the ball in the correct position?” but “Does this ball position support what the player needs to do next?”

4.3 Dimensions of Control Space

Dribble Height

At the Foundation level, controlling the ball around or below the hip and waist provides a useful starting reference because it helps establish a repeatable relationship among the hand, ball, and body.

In a validated checklist for straight speed dribbling, controlling the ball below the waist was identified as one characteristic of proficient performance.³ This finding should be interpreted within the specific task studied rather than as evidence that every basketball dribble must remain below the waist.

The appropriate height of the ball may change according to:

  • Player height
  • Body position
  • Movement speed
  • Defensive pressure
  • Dribble Tempo
  • Control Tempo
  • Direction of movement
  • Intended next action

Research examining coordination during basketball dribbling also demonstrates that combinations of joint movements can cooperate to stabilize task-relevant outcomes such as dribble height.⁵

The coaching objective is not:

Keep Every Dribble Low

but:

Control the Height Required by the Action

A low dribble is useful when the situation requires it. A higher trajectory is not automatically incorrect if the player remains in control and the ball position supports the intended movement.

Ball Width

The ball does not always need to remain immediately beside the body. A player may intentionally move the ball farther laterally to:

  • Create separation from pressure
  • Change the angle of attack
  • Prepare a transfer
  • Support a change of direction
  • Move the ball away from the defender

However, increasing the distance between the ball and body also increases the spatial demand of recovering and organizing the next Control Phase.

The objective is to develop usable width, not simply to move the ball as far from the body as possible.

At the Foundation level:

Keep the Ball Close Enough to Control.

As skill develops:

Move the Ball Far Enough to Create the Required Space.

Eventually:

Adjust the Width According to the Defender and Intended Action.

Width becomes a variable that the player learns to control rather than a permanently prescribed distance.

Ball Depth

The ball can also be positioned forward or backward relative to the player. During straight speed dribbling, positioning the ball forward and lateral to the body rather than directly in front was identified as one criterion of proficient performance.³ Positioning the ball directly in the running path may interfere with locomotion and require unnecessary adjustments in speed or body position.

This does not mean that forward-lateral position is appropriate for every dribble. Depending on the situation, the ball may be positioned:

  • Forward: To support continued locomotion or acceleration.
  • Beside the Body: To maintain a controlled or protected position.
  • Behind the Current Body Line: During retreat, protection, or selected changes of direction.

The appropriate depth depends on the trajectory of the player and where the ball needs to become available next. The ball does not always need to follow the body. At different moments, it may lead the movement, remain beside the body, or move away from the current body position to create the next action.

4.4 Control Space During Locomotion

As the player begins walking and running, Control Space moves with the body. The ball can no longer be understood only according to where it is located on the court. Its position must also be understood relative to the moving player.

This creates a useful distinction:

  • Absolute Ball Position: Where the ball is located within the playing space.
  • Relative Ball Position: Where the ball is located relative to the player’s body.

For ball handling, relative position is particularly important. During locomotion, the player continually adapts the ball relative to:

  • Foot placement
  • Body orientation
  • Center-of-mass trajectory
  • Movement velocity
  • Direction of travel
  • Available space
  • Defensive pressure

Recent research examining young basketball players running with and without a dribble found that adding the basketball altered interlimb coordination, symmetry, and temporal variability.⁷ These adaptations reinforce the idea that locomotion and ball control must adapt to one another rather than preserve one rigid movement relationship.

Control Space should therefore move and adapt with the player, rather than remain fixed around one anatomical landmark.

4.5 Ball Position and Protection

Defensive pressure changes the spatial problem. The player must now manage not only the relationship between the ball and body, but also the relationship among:

Ball ↔ Body ↔ Defender

An effective protected position increases the difficulty for the defender to reach the ball while preserving the ball handler’s ability to continue playing. This may involve:

  • Moving the ball farther from the defender
  • Positioning the body between the defender and ball
  • Changing body orientation
  • Changing dribble height
  • Changing ball width
  • Retreating to create space
  • Transferring the ball to another Control Position
  • Changing rhythm or tempo

Game-based research in U19 and senior women's basketball demonstrates the importance of defensive pressure. High defensive pressure was associated with substantially greater likelihood of ineffective dribbling than minimal defensive pressure.⁸

This provides a rationale for progressing from spatial-control practice without opposition toward increasingly representative practice under defensive pressure.⁸˒⁹

Protection, however, should not simply mean preventing the defender from touching the ball. The objective is to protect the ball while preserving the next action.

A useful protected position should ideally allow the player to remain capable of accelerating, changing direction, passing, shooting, finishing, or continuing the dribble.

4.6 Creating Separation with the Body

Ball protection does not depend on ball position alone. The player’s body can help create separation between the defender and the ball.

This relationship can be considered as:

Ball Position

Body Position

Foot Position

Available Space

When the ball is controlled on one side, the player may organize the body so that the defender must move through additional space to reach the ball. However, creating separation must remain legal. Under FIBA rules, an offensive player with the ball may not hook or wrap an arm around a defender to obtain an advantage, push the defender away to create space, or use an extended forearm or hand while dribbling to prevent the opponent from gaining control of the ball.¹⁰

The objective should therefore not be to teach the off arm as a rigid barrier or as a tool for pushing the defender away. Instead, the player should learn to protect the ball primarily through:

Ball Position

Body Position

Foot Position

Legal Use of Space

The body protects the ball by controlling spatial relationships rather than simply creating force against the defender.

4.7 Visual Availability

One important benefit of spatial control is reducing unnecessary visual dependence on the ball.

In stationary dribbling research, skilled players demonstrated more accurate and less variable ball placement while maintaining their gaze forward.¹ A validated assessment of straight speed dribbling likewise included forward gaze rather than continuous visual tracking of the ball as characteristic of proficient execution.³

Research under altered perceptual conditions also suggests that skilled basketball players can adapt the coordination of the dribble when visual information changes.⁴ Basketball decision-making research further demonstrates the importance of acquiring information from the environment while performing game actions.¹¹

This does not mean that a player should never look at the ball. There are situations in which briefly locating the ball visually may be appropriate. The developmental objective is instead to reduce unnecessary dependence on continuous visual monitoring.

At first:

Control the Ball While Perceiving the Game

Spatial control therefore supports perception. The less visual attention the player must dedicate to managing the ball, the greater the opportunity to gather information about defenders, teammates, space, and the basket.

4.8 Changing the Control Position

Advanced ball handling requires the ability to transfer the ball from one functional Control Position to another. For example, from Right to Left Control Position may occur through:

  • Crossover
  • Between-the-legs crossover
  • Behind-the-back transfer
  • Spin-related transfer
  • Other task-specific solutions

The important concept is not the name of the move.

The player is solving the spatial problem:

Current Control Position

New Control Position

A successful transfer does not simply move the ball from one hand to another. It places the ball in a new position that supports the action that follows. A poor transfer may leave the ball:

  • Too far from the body
  • Too close to the defender
  • Behind the intended movement
  • Misaligned with the next step
  • Difficult to accelerate from
  • Difficult to protect

The purpose of the transfer is not merely to change hands, but to organize the next action before that action begins. In-game research examining hand selection across different phases of dribbling further supports the idea that hand use is not fixed throughout possession, but changes according to the context and demands of the dribble.¹²

4.9 Expanding Control Space

At the Foundation level, players benefit from beginning with a relatively simple and repeatable spatial reference. The ball-side hip/waist area can serve as an initial Control Position from which the Pull and Push actions are developed. Giving the player a consistent starting reference helps establish reliable control before greater spatial variability is introduced.

Foundation Principle:

Establish the Space → Stabilize Control

Once control within this initial space becomes more consistent, the player can gradually explore a wider range of ball positions:

  • Higher ↔ Lower
  • Closer ↔ Wider
  • Beside ↔ Forward
  • Same Side ↔ Across the Body

However, development should not be measured simply by how far the player can move the ball from the body. A larger movement range becomes useful only when the player can still:

  • Recover the ball
  • Organize the next Control Phase
  • Maintain balance
  • Coordinate the feet and body
  • Protect possession
  • Execute the intended next action

Control Space is defined by usable control rather than maximum reach. The objective is to expand the range of positions from which effective basketball actions remain available.

4.10 Developing Spatial Control

The developmental objective progresses from controlling the ball within one predictable spatial reference to intentionally adapting and manipulating ball position according to the basketball problem.

At the Foundation level, the player establishes a reliable Control Position:

Stabilize Control

The player learns to repeatedly organize the ball within a functional space while maintaining posture, rhythm, and visual availability.

At the Development level, the player expands and adapts Control Space:

Stabilize

Expand

Adapt

Without losing the ability to organize the next action, the player learns to vary:

  • Ball height
  • Ball width
  • Ball depth
  • Control side
  • Transfer path
  • Body orientation

At the Application level, ball position becomes increasingly responsive to the defender and available space:

Position

Manipulate

Exploit

The player learns to adjust the ball according to:

  • Defender position
  • Defender reach
  • Available driving space
  • Intended direction
  • Body contact
  • Passing opportunities
  • Shooting opportunities
  • Finishing opportunities

The developmental progression can be summarized as:

Establish

Stabilize

Expand

Manipulate

At first, the player learns where the ball can be controlled. Eventually, the player learns where the ball needs to be controlled for the action the game presents.

4.11 Coaching Principle

There is no single correct place to dribble the basketball. A useful ball position is one that allows the player to remain in control while preparing the next basketball action.

At the Foundation level, a consistent Control Position provides an initial reference:

Prepare the Next Action

As skill develops, that reference becomes increasingly flexible. The player learns to alter the height, width, depth, and side of the ball without losing the functional relationship between the ball and body.

Eventually, ball positioning becomes a tool for creating space, protecting possession, changing direction, and responding to the defender. The goal is not to keep the ball in one place. The goal is to control where the ball needs to be next.
